Live, From Newport Beach, Ca.
A syndicated R&B/Soul oldies radio show is taking requests and making dedications tonight from all over southern California....and for some reason Las Vegas. The host reminds us that, as ever, the most requested song is “Always And Forever,” by Heatwave. The inevitable nuptial first dance anthem makes one jones for a happier time, when pop was merely derived instead of synthesized.
Heatwave, a late-70’s disco-soul group, may represent the average of this late-night audience’s taste. But the standard deviation runs from ‘60’s basement blue light specials like the Dells’ “Stay in My Corner” to Smokey Robinson 2nd (or was it 3rd?) comeback jams like “Agony & Ecstasy” (1975). The longer I listen, the more I risk reliving every agony and ecstasy I’ve had between about 1965 and ........ last Saturday; it's Sade’s torchy “By Your Side”.
Ooooh, ahhhh, and ouch: Now you got me "Goin' In Circles" over Karen C. in 1969 all over again. But I can’t turn it off. That’s primo old-school radio, working me off the clock like WalMart.
But what really gets me are the names, places and shout-outs in between the records.
